PHP is the engine behind the page. Visitors never see it. Hackers still look for cracks in it.

On 21 October 2026, the people who maintain PHP released an emergency fix for two critical security holes. Security teams call them PHP2Shell (also written php2shell) — tracked as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619.

In simple terms: the latest critical PHP vulnerabilities, collectively tracked as php2shell, allow unauthenticated remote code execution (RCE) and memory corruption across web servers running PHP. A skilled attacker may be able to run their own commands on your server without logging into WordPress — and in some setups, before your website software even starts.

This guide is for website owners and for technical teams. It explains what happened in plain language, then goes deeper on the technical side, WordPress impact, how to check your version, and how to fix it.

What is PHP, in one minute?

PHP is software that lives on your web hosting server. When someone opens your site, the server uses PHP to build the page and talk to the database.

WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Magento, Laravel apps and many custom business sites all sit on top of PHP. If PHP is unsafe, the website on top of it can be unsafe too — even if your plugins look up to date.

What is this dangerous PHP vulnerability?

PHP2Shell is the public nickname for two related bugs inside PHP itself:

CVE-2026-109618 — When PHP runs out of memory at the wrong moment, it can leave broken / partly initialised data behind. Cleanup code may trust that data, which can lead to memory corruption and remote takeover.

CVE-2026-109619 — Leftover internal state from an old request can survive after its memory is freed. A later request on the same worker may reuse that stale state (a use-after-free style path), enabling memory disclosure, crashes or remote takeover.

Both are rated Critical (CVSS v4.0 score 9.2). The PHP project’s own advice is clear: there is no complete workaround — you must update PHP.

Think of it like a faulty lock on the building, not a broken lock on one office door. Changing the office furniture (themes and plugins) does not replace the building lock (PHP).

Technical overview: what php2shell actually breaks

For developers, sysadmins and security reviewers, here is the tighter summary.

Unauthenticated RCE on the PHP web runtime

The latest critical PHP vulnerabilities, collectively tracked as php2shell, allow unauthenticated remote code execution (RCE) and memory corruption across web servers running PHP. “Unauthenticated” means the attacker does not need a valid application session, WordPress cookie or admin password for the serious cases described by the PHP security team and major cloud vendors.

Affected web-serving installations include common SAPIs and stacks such as:

Apache with mod_php (called out as highest risk in PHP’s guidance)

PHP-FPM behind Nginx or Apache

php-cgi

FrankenPHP

LiteSpeed PHP handlers

On the highest-risk paths, a malicious HTTP request can hit vulnerable PHP request lifecycle / cleanup logic before application code runs. Your WordPress
functions.php
, plugin auth checks or custom middleware never get a chance to say “no.”

CVE-2026-109618 — OOM corruption path

PHP uses abrupt control-flow handling for out-of-memory (OOM) conditions. If allocation fails while internal request structures are only partly initialised, later cleanup may read or branch on invalid memory. Chained correctly, that corruption can become code execution in the web worker process.

In practical ops terms: memory pressure, large request bodies and hard memory limits matter. Temporary config hardening may reduce some trigger conditions, but vendors and researchers have warned that popular “ini tweaks” are not a full fix.

CVE-2026-109619 — stale / use-after-free request state

Request-owned internal state can outlive the memory it pointed at. A later request handled by the same long-lived worker may touch that stale state before normal initialisation resets it. Confirmed impact classes in public advisories include:

heap use-after-free behaviour

memory disclosure (including sensitive process memory in some analyses)

worker crashes (denial of service)

remote code execution with the privileges of the PHP/web worker account

This is why recycling workers more aggressively is sometimes discussed as a partial compensating control — and why patching the binary remains mandatory.

Shared root cause

Both CVEs sit in core request memory management and abnormal termination handling — code nearly every PHP web request touches. That is why:

framework choice (WordPress vs Laravel) does not remove the risk by itself

plugin updates do not replace a PHP upgrade

WAF rules can reduce known traffic shapes but cannot rewrite the vulnerable runtime

Blast radius if RCE succeeds

Successful exploitation typically runs as the PHP/web user (for example
www-data
,
nginx
, or a pool user). From there an attacker may:

write webshells under the document root

read
wp-config.php
and other secrets reachable by that user

pivot to the database with stolen credentials

tamper with uploads, caches or cron entry points

Isolation (separate FPM pools, containers, least privilege, no shared writable dirs across tenants) limits damage. It does not remove the need to patch.

Can hackers really get in without a password?

That is the worrying part for non-technical owners. Official and vendor summaries say these flaws can allow unauthenticated remote code execution. In everyday language:

the attacker does not need your WordPress admin login

they send specially crafted web requests to a vulnerable server

if the attack works, they may run commands as the web server user

We will not publish attack steps here. Website owners do not need them. You need the patch.

Is this being used in real attacks?

Reports differ slightly by source, so treat each claim carefully:

Cloud and security firms reported early attack attempts and scanning around mid–late October 2026, including activity before the public fix date.

CISA’s alert on 21 October 2026 urged immediate patching and said it had not confirmed exploitation at the moment of publication.

For a business owner, the safe reading is simple: assume attackers are trying, and patch today.

Does this affect WordPress?

Yes — if your WordPress site is running on a vulnerable version of PHP.

WordPress.org’s own security note says:

this is a PHP problem, not a WordPress-only bug

no WordPress core update is required for these issues

you must update PHP (or ask your host to do it)

you can see your PHP version under Tools → Site Health → Info → Server

So if someone says “I already clicked Update WordPress,” that is good hygiene — but it does not close this hole by itself.

Who needs to act?

WordPress blogs and company sites

WooCommerce and other PHP stores

Client websites you manage for customers

Old microsites and forgotten subdomains still on PHP

Any custom PHP app on a VPS, cloud server or shared host

If you only “rent” hosting and never touch servers, you still need to check and chase your host until they confirm a fixed PHP version.

Which PHP versions are safe?

As of the 21 October 2026 emergency release, move to one of these fixed versions (or newer on the same line):

PHP 8.5.12

PHP 8.4.27

PHP 8.3.36

PHP 8.2.35

Affected unpatched ranges on supported branches include builds before those fixes (for example PHP 8.5.0–8.5.11, 8.4.0–8.4.26, 8.3.0–8.3.35, 8.2.0–8.2.34). Broader historical branches back through older PHP lines are also described as exposed when serving web requests.

If your site is still on PHP 8.1, 8.0, 7.4 or older, you are on an end-of-life line. The PHP project is not shipping normal updates for those. Minimal source backports for 7.4 / 8.0 / 8.1 were provided for special cases. Ask your host for a backported package if they offer one — and plan a move to PHP 8.2+ as soon as your plugins allow. National cyber guidance for hard cases is: take the site offline until it can be made safe.

How to check your website in 2 minutes

Log in to WordPress admin.

Go to Tools → Site Health → Info → Server.

Find PHP version (and note the SAPI if shown: fpm-fcgi, apache2handler, and so on).

Compare it with the safe list above.

Reading the result:

Shows 8.2.35 / 8.3.36 / 8.4.27 / 8.5.12 (or higher on that branch) → good sign; still confirm with your host that workers were restarted on the new build.

Shows an older 8.2 / 8.3 / 8.4 / 8.5 number → treat as urgent; ask for the patch.

Shows 8.1 or older → urgent upgrade path; do not ignore.

Also check your hosting panel. On some servers, CLI PHP and web PHP can differ. What Site Health shows for a normal page load is what matters for visitors.

How to fix it (step by step)

Option A — You use shared or managed WordPress hosting

Open a support ticket today.

Ask: “Are we on PHP 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27 or 8.5.12 (or your patched package for php2shell / CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619)?”

Ask them to confirm the version after restart.

If they mention only a firewall (WAF), thank them — then still insist on the PHP upgrade. A firewall is temporary cover, not the full fix.

When they reply, re-check Site Health yourself.

Option B — You or your developer manage a VPS / cloud server

Upgrade PHP packages to a fixed release from your OS vendor or trusted PHP packages.

Restart PHP-FPM / Apache / LiteSpeed workers so old processes die.

Verify the live web PHP version (not only
php -v
on CLI).

Smoke-test the homepage, login, forms and checkout.

If you use Docker or Kubernetes, rebuild and redeploy images — do not assume old containers updated themselves.

Option C — You cannot patch immediately

Prioritise any site open to the public internet.

Keep host/WAF protections on.

If you are stuck on very old PHP and cannot upgrade today, seriously consider taking that site offline until it is fixed — that is the advice several cyber agencies are repeating.

Technical teams may also apply vendor-documented compensating controls (WAF body limits, disabling risky ini features, more aggressive worker recycling). Treat every one of those as partial. Patch remains mandatory.

What can go wrong if you ignore it?

If an attacker succeeds, they may be able to:

plant hidden malware on your site

steal database passwords from config files

create fake admin users

deface pages or inject spam

steal customer data your site can reach

use your server to attack others

That is why this is being treated as an emergency, not a routine “update when you have time” note.

After you patch: a short safety check

Confirm the new PHP version in Site Health.

Review WordPress users for accounts you do not recognise.

Scan for unexpected files, especially in uploads folders.

Watch for sudden outbound traffic, unknown plugins, or PHP workers spawning shells / download tools.

Rotate passwords and keys if you see anything suspicious, and restore from a clean backup if needed.

If you believe the site was already hacked, follow a proper incident process (isolate, clean or restore, rotate secrets). WordPress.org also maintains a “My site was hacked” help path for owners.

What this means for businesses

For Indian and international companies running client sites or internal PHP tools:

Make a list of every live PHP website you own or manage.

Assign one person to confirm each PHP version by end of day.

Stop treating “WordPress updated” as the same thing as “server safe.”

Retire ancient PHP versions the same way you would retire an unsupported office PC on the public internet.

Software companies and agencies should message clients with the safe version numbers and a clear ask for hosting confirmation — not jargon alone.

Quick checklist you can copy

Open Site Health and note your PHP version.

If it is not a fixed release, contact hosting now.

Get onto 8.2.35 / 8.3.36 / 8.4.27 / 8.5.12 (or newer).

Confirm after restart.

Keep firewall rules on as extra protection.

Check for strange admins or files.

Plan an exit from PHP 8.1 and older.

FAQ

What is this PHP vulnerability in simple words?

It is a critical security hole inside PHP, the engine many websites run on.
